People tend to like to sneek into places which are forbidden, especially when they are children. Then who wouldn’t want explore an old locked-down building? We have passed by the structure located in the heart of the town daily and the sight of locked gates has become so common in the past 30 years, that we have almost forgotten the times, when children played and buzzed there.
–Our first aim was to open the gates of nostalgia for the people, who have memories of this building and for the others who are curious by nature and would like to reveal this “secret”, seen by many day by day. The other goal is reflected by this exhibition. our town is a book of precious history, but we live in the 21th century, and our task is to meet this points. We gave this tone on the presentation of our town at the European Capital of Culture -said Gyula Porga in his opening speech mayor of Veszprém.
The exhibition is open to the public until the 30th of November and after that the ruinous property will be a part of the Petőfi Theater reconstruction – stated the mayor.
The dispendious show was inspired by the connection to the Petőfi Theater and reflect to the ornamentation works by István Medgyaszay. The strange name may sounding unfamiliar, but in reality the ornamentation can be found in the life of any of us, because it refer only to the art of decoration. In many cases the functionality overtops the artistry, because it looks excrescential. However, the life and the society is not all about funcionality.
Dániel Kovács art hisztorian, the advisor of the gallery said, the life is not only eat, sleep, egestion, the life is work, adventure, exploration, commitment, game, belief, love, hate, salty, bitter and sweet. When people draw mustaches to the portraits of the history books or find the perfect wrapping paper for the presents, they make common, but authorial decisions, which tells the presence of the ornamentation in our veryday life. The decoration actually is one of the most personal aspects of the authorial being, motives we create, wear, or decorate our properities, surroundings projects our own world. The ornamentation is not a lungauage but story, and we can get acquainted with 12 stories on this exhibition.
In the age, where the most important tool is the computer, this gallery has been organised, where joint effort made 12 freshly painted white walls propagate the importance of decoration: unique arts, different explanations, 21th century stories made with the “ancient brush” of ornamentation.
According to Dániel Kovács the ornamentation is tells personal stories and creates a platform over the borders of language, society, age. It’s importance is larger than ever.
