This game was created in the framework of the project Reveal YouropEaN Cultural Heritage, shortly ENriCH, supported by the Europe for Citizens Programme.
Young people from five cities in five European countries took part in the events of the Veszprém-led project between 2018 and 2020. They got acquainted with several aspects of the cultural heritage of the project cities and discussed what protecting tangible and intangible cultural heritage means to them.
Among other things, the events provided a great opportunity to think about the possible benefits of living in a multi-ethnic settlement, the interaction between one’s local and European identities, the ways culture can boost the economy, and the manifold interaction between the participating settlements, historical events and the rich cultural heritage of our continent over the centuries.
During the project city maps were created, based on young people's ideas to present the local heritage with a new approach. Among them the map of Veszprém bears the title “Act like a Veszprémer”, and served as a basis of this city exploration game, offering three walking routes.
You can reach the game here.
To participate in the game you can choose any of the three tours and take a very interesting and cosy walk in the town. There are cca. 15 stops in each tour. To be able to find them there are several hints: the name (address) of the stop, an old picture about the place and the city map. Should it be a bit more difficult to get to the next stop we put descriptions into the text as well. You will be able to answer most of the questions only if you are on the spot – that is our motivation for you to take the tour.
Please remember: safety first! During the game pay attention around you, look up from your cell phone while walking.
The Secret of the Ispán (Count)
Distance: 1,5 km
Length: 1 hour
Level of Difficulty: easy
The town of Veszprém and the area around it used to be the centre of the royal estate. Mainly, it was the seat of the ispán or count, the leader of the castle district.
The ispán was appointed by the monarch, and they had administrative, judicial and military functions. Their quarters were in the fortified inner castle. In times of war, the ispán was the commander of the troops raised in the castle district.
The ispán’s official duties were: administrating the royal county, maintaining law and order by applying royal decrees and laws.
Description of the game
During the tour you will need your skills, knowledge and common sense to solve the riddles and secrets. By doing so, you will gradually reveal the secret of the ispán.
After solving each riddle and answering each question correctly, you will get a key as a reward.
Use all your ingenuity and skills, and help us to defend the castle by collecting the right number of keys!
The Necklace of the Queen
Distance: 2,5 km
Length: 1,5 hours
Level of Difficulty: medium
Veszprém is often called “the city of queens”. The first queen to be crowned here was King Stephen’s wife Gisela. She liked the town so much, that she had let built a private church. Many queens over the centuries were crowned here by the bishop of Veszprém. The bishop held the title “The Queen’s Chancellor”.
Description of the game
The town of Veszprém is about to welcome Queen Elisabeth and Franz Joseph I of Austria. Honouring Queen Elisabeth’s contribution to the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, the town of Veszprém would like to present her a pearl necklace upon her arrival. Unfortunately, the necklace breaks, and the pearls roll all around the town.
Help us find all the pearls. Answer correctly and get a pearl for each correct answer. Use all your knowledge and cleverness to make the Queen’s necklace whole again!
Watch your Fire, Save the Water
Distance: 3,5 km
Length: 2 hours
Level of Difficulty: medium
Our route leads us to the valley of Séd brook. It had cut a 60-80 m deep valley into the dolomite plateau.
Our ancestors first settled here in the valley, and then gradually took over the plateau.
Walking along the brook you will not only enjoy the beautiful view, but you will also learn about the history of our 1000 year old town.
There are only a few settlements in Hungary that have as many history related locations, monuments and buildings as Veszprém.
You have the Castle Hill as a lighthouse for navigation.
Let’s start the tour!
The starting point of this walk is in Köd Street opposite the bus station, in the centre of the town.
Use the map. The entrance to the forest is at the end of Galamb Street near the bus station.
Description of the game:
A fire has broken out in the town of Veszprém. By overcoming the hurdles, you can draw a bucket of water out of Séd brook.
Your task is to collect enough water by the end of the tour to put out the fire.
Should you be interested in a more thoroughly guided tour, you can gather information about local tour guides at Veszprém Tourinform. There are several spectacular places, buildings and stories in town to discover!
If you feel like reading more about the city’s history and sights, there are numerous readable books in the office as well. We have compiled a collection to start with:
