Margaret Ruins

Looking down from Benedict Hill you can catch sight of the Margaret ruins. More Shorter

The remains of significant early medieval ecclesiastical buildings are easy to find if you walk down the stairs by St Michael's Cathedral and follow the winding Séd Brook. The former church and monastery was built by Bishop Bertalan for Dominican nuns around 1240. St Margaret, King Béla IV's daughter was educated here for six years. The foundation walls of some additional buildings can also be seen among the houses by the small single-naved church. The church and the monastery were destroyed at the time of the Turkish Conquest. The ruins were excavated in 1938 but today only the foundation walls and part of the church wall are visible.
