Let us follow the road of Alice through the rabbit hole in the exceptionally spectacular ballet of Christopher Wheeldon, which was inspired by the popular child novel of Lewis Carrol – broadcast from the Royal Opera House London. More Shorter
On a sunny afternoon Alice surprisingly recognizes that the friend of her parents’ changed to a white rabbit. When she follows the rabbit to his hole, everything becomes confused. Alice meets a lot of strange creatures in Wonderland. The attractive Queen of Hearts, who is pursued because of alleged cake robberies, captivates her heart. Misunderstandings after misunderstandings. Once Alice wakes up, and finds herself at a garden party. Was it just a dream? The Alice in Wonderland ballet burst in 2011 into the ballet world with its rich colours, its incredible visuals and its demanding choreography. The music of Joby Talbot is inspired by the contemporary sound world, but we can recognize melodies from the 19th century, as well. The fantasy of Bob Crowley amazes us with his puppet art and his video art, so we can believe that Wonderland exists. Alice faces a lot of characters who can be recognized immediately: the awfully angry Queen of Hearts – who parodies the Sleeping Beauty –, the card-players, the curving butterfly caterpillar and the jigging, mad Hatter. The ballet presents the story of Lewis Carrol with rich details, but it shows its grotesque side, as well: the mass in the kitchen, the creepy disembodied cat head and the floating tea party. From these ingredients they have created the most excellent performance of The Royal Ballet, which can entertain the whole family.
