When Rodolphe, the penniless poet meets first the embroidering girl Mimì, they immediately fell in love. Unfortunately they cannot be happy, since Rodolphe realizes that Mimì is ill. The acknowledged director, Richard Jones (Borisz Godunov, Triptichon) directs the new variant of La bohème. The opera, which is a mixture of fervid and biting irony and tragedy concentrates on the group of young artists who live in poverty in the bohemian quarter of Paris in the 19th century.
Jones unfolds the classic story in rich details, while Stewart Laing puts it into scenery that reminds us of the 1850s. Puccini depicted the bohemian Paris and composed a melodic music in a romantic way, and he borrowed the mood of love from our everyday lives. This kind of depiction conquered the audience’s heart, and made La bohème one of the most popular opera of the world. It was presented in Covent Garden in 1897 for the first time, and since then it was presented for more than 500 times.
