Royal Opera House - Macbeth

Royal Opera House – Macbeth (05/13/2018 17:00 - 19:30)

Antonio Pappano is the conductor of Verdi’s opera, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy. The conductor is the member of a great staff, in which we can find the brilliant Anna Nyetrebko, Željko Lučić and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, as well – broadcast from the Royal Opera. More Shorter

Verdi was the prisoner of Shakespeare’s works all in his life. This love began with Macbeth, the piece that he considered to be one of the best works of mankind. Along with his librettist Francesco Maria Piave Verdi tried to create something extraordinary. Their brilliange is recognizable in all of the notes of the libretto. Verdi is very theatrical in this piece: he is swelled with demonic energies. He fights on the side of General Macbeth – when witches predict that he will be a king, as well –, merciless ambition urges him and his wife to commit terrible acts. On the price of the murders he becomes a king, but they mean the end of his reign. The prediction of the witches comes true: Macbeth and his wife lose their lives and justice will prevail. The version of director Phyllida Lloyd uses black, red and golden colours. The crimson costumes of the witches were designed by Anthony Ward. Lloyd feels the deep pain of Macbeth’s childlessness to hide in the background of the terrible acts. The Royal Opera House plays the version of Verdi from 1865, in which we can hear the exciting La luca langue aria of Lady Macbeth.
