Tosca is one of the most glittering stars of our present opera season. From the first sinister chord we can feel the atmosphere of the political disturbance and terror. The version of Jonathan Kent is located in political period of Rome in the 1800s. Scarpia, the leader of the secret police – the most evil character of the opera history –, pursues and tortures the enemies of the state to death. His gloomy, demonic arias are in the opposite of Tosca and Cavardossi with the ethereal arias like Vissi d’arte and E lucevan le stele. Giacomo Puccini’s tragedy conquered the audience of 1900, and it is still the most popular opera today: because of its impressive story and its fantastic music. Puccini creates the illusion of the reality with his careful notes when it comes to a distant roar of cannon, like the bell of Te Deum of the first act and the fusillade of the firing squad.
